Guardian Vietnam’s Guardiancares programme aims to help children in need in remote areas of Vietnam by offering better educational opportunities through scholarship funds. In partnership with charity saigonchildren, for every Guardian bath gel item sold, Guardian will contribute VND5,000 to a fund to support children’s tuition fees. It also donated 2,000 personal healthcare kits to primary school children in the country, while all profits from sales of a Guardian teddy bear online and in stores are donated to saigonchildren and Caritas Vietnam to support rehabilitation projects for children with impaired mobility.

In Cambodia, we have sponsored more than 160 students living in rural areas through KHEN, a local NGO that focuses on providing education to children with special needs or difficulty in learning, girls, minorities and children living in extreme poverty, by providing them access to desktop computers, laptops, and printers. The electronics drive was a gateway for the children to gain access to knowledge and learning.&nbsp;

Our team was more than excited to contribute. Those at Lucky Supermarket and Guardian worked together to raise funds for KHEN to purchase stationery such as notebooks, pens️, pencils, and whiteboards. To make it more meaningful, Lucky was happy to match 30% of the total funds raised, as well as donating 340 packs of biscuits to keep their hearts and bellies full. Lucky also donated US$20,000 to Kantha Bopha Children Hospital to support its provision of free and quality check-ups and treatments for children.&nbsp;

7-Eleven also launched a similar initiative in China. Since 2004, we have set up donation boxes in stores to support the Guangzhou Yang Ai Special Children Parent Club, which helps children with special needs and their families. With the donations, the Club helps build a support platform for families in need, providing consultations, lectures and training.&nbsp;

7-Eleven’s Sik Tak Fan La campaign aims to raise HK$2 million to support Pei Ho Counterparts, a social enterprise founded by restaurant owner Ming Gor in Sham Shui Po, which is equivalent to more than 80,000 meal boxes, providing five months of food assistance to elderly, homeless and underprivileged families in need. Meaning ‘the meal is ready to serve’ in Cantonese, Sik Tak Fan La will involve 50 cents being donated for each designated 7-SELECT meal box sold in stores.

Every year since 1985, DFI Retail Group team members have strapped on their walking shoes for the Walk Up Jardine House event, in support of mental health charity MINDSET. Each year, more than 500 participants take part in Walk Up Jardine House. The annual event has raised more than HK$50 million since it was established in 1982. In 2022, DFI Retail Group teams walked up 6.1 million steps, equivalent to 6,522 Jardine Houses, which raised HK$592,000 for MINDSET. MINDSET was founded by Jardine Matheson Group in 2002 to raise awareness, funds and changing the perceptions towards mental health.

With the success of “Sik Jor Fan Mei” in HK, we launched similar charity programmes in Southeast Asia markets in Singapore and Malaysia. Working with The Food Bank Singapore, which is a non-profit organisation that provides free meals and dry rations to families in need, we spearheaded the campaign “Chi Fan Le Ma?”, which means “Have You Eaten?”, in August 2022, which again, saw us matching donation SG¢ 10 cents for every kilogramme of our Own Brand Meadows rice sold. The goal was to provide a million meals to help those in hardship over the next two years. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, “Sudah Makan?”, which literally translates to “Have You Eaten?”, was launched the same month in collaboration with The Lost Food Project. To kick start the campaign, we delivered 4,000 kg of food essentials, which was equivalent to 11,430 meals, to support 200 families that were struggling. They also received shopping vouchers for our Giant outlets so they could purchase whatever they needed.&nbsp;

In Indonesia, Hero Supermarket has continued to expand its KASIH programme, which can be translated as “Hero’s Healthy Mothers and Children’s Commitment,” by donating healthy and nutritious food as well as baby food to support over 20 local healthcare centres with the aim to improve and raise the awareness of community health.&nbsp;

Giant Singapore and Malaysia & Hero Indonesia: Feeding the Needy in Southeast Asia

DFI has worked hard to keep our product prices low across businesses and markets. In 2022, our price adjustment was 1.3% while inflation was 2.3%. In total we delivered US$16 million savings to our customers in food and US$62 million savings in health and beauty products with our low prices campaigns.

In the past year, we have expanded the product range of our Own Brands, which included Meadows, Yu Pin King, Giant, Guardian and Mannings, from 3,200 to over 4,000 SKUs, to cover almost all categories to serve our customers’ everyday needs. Meadows, in particular, expanded its portfolio from largely food, non-food and fresh products to health and beauty and general merchandise. Mannings and Guardian also launched their own branded cotton, paper, shampoo, body wash and hand wash to offer customers another great value option.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DFI Own Brands Delivering Value 

For the past three years, IKEA has helped spruce up the homes of those in need in Hong Kong with donations through Operation Santa Claus (OSC), an annual fundraising drive run by the South China Morning Post and public broadcaster RTHK that has run since 1988. In 2020, IKEA Hong Kong donated nearly 2,800 items, including furniture and accessories, that had previously been displayed in stores, helping more than 300 residents of subdivided flats; low-income workers; women, children and elderly living in poverty; migrant workers; and ethnic minorities. IKEA followed that up in 2021 by donating HK$180,000 worth of furniture and accessories that underprivileged people had specifically asked for, including light bulbs, crayons and shelving units.

Wellcome’s rice donation charity programme Sik Jor Fan Mei donates HK$0.5 for every kilogram of Yu Pin King rice it sells, doubling that to HK$1 on the first day of each month. That money is put into a fund that ensures local charity Foodlink can continue to provide food to people in need. Wellcome also steps up the support during festivals, providing nutritious food so underprivileged people can celebrate. Just five months after it launched, the programme had already raised HK$5 million – equivalent to 16 million bowls of rice, enough to feed more than 14,000 adults for a year. DFI has expanded this initiative to Singapore and Malaysia.

Wellcome Hong Kong: Feeding the Community with Food Donations

The 7-Eleven Franchising System has so far given hundreds of franchisees the chance to be their own bosses and build successful businesses. The company finds the best locations for stores, and builds and operates them, giving potential franchisees an easier way to start their business without massive upfront costs. It provides comprehensive training and ongoing support for the franchisees, who include everyone from homemakers to young graduates to the company’s own team members. It also provides franchising opportunities to charities, so they can provide employment to people with special needs. So far two of them, Rehabilitation Alliance and Youth Outreach, have established stores with 7-Eleven.

7-Eleven: Empowering People to Build Their Own Businesses through Franchising

The 7-Eleven Integrated Distribution Centre in Hong Kong helps people with developmental challenges to find work. In partnership with Caritas, a multi-service NGO aiming to help different sectors of the community, it set up the Enterprise Linked Apprenticeship Programme, which provides training and working opportunities, often for the first time, to mentally challenged people, mostly with autism. During the 12-month training programme, they develop communication skills and learn to adapt to a workplace environment. They start working on simple tasks, but as their performance improves, goals are introduced to add further motivation and sense of achievement, with several of these team members eventually winning picking accuracy competitions. The programme started back in 2013, and since then 40 trainees have joined, with several members of the class of 2013 still with the company.

7-Eleven Hong Kong: Providing Employment for People with Disabilities

In 2021, when plenty of retailers experienced price inflation and passed it onto their customers, many of Wellcome’s stores actually reduced prices for hundreds of the most popular items. The company strives to keep prices as low as possible, reducing the financial pressure on ordinary shoppers across Asia. Since September 2020, Wellcome’s Low Prices Locked campaign in Hong Kong has guaranteed prices that don’t increase with inflation on hundreds of everyday items, focusing on staples that typical customers buy. The fifth wave of the pandemic had a serious adverse impact on the economy and people’s livelihoods, causing families to be more conscious about their spending. In response, Wellcome extended the Low Prices Locked programme on more than 800 selected food and daily essentials for a minimum of six months, providing customers with stability, transparency and protection against price fluctuations.

In 2019, Cold Storage and Giant started working with Food Bank Singapore on the Better Together campaign, which aims to tackle the problem of food insecurity head on. According to The Hunger Report 2019, 10.4% of Singaporean households experience food insecurity – defined as not having access to the food needed for a healthy life – at least once in 12 months. The campaign encourages customers to purchase and donate items needed by Food Bank Singapore’s beneficiaries, with a focus on daily necessities and nutritious products, supplementing this with the company’s own donations. In the first year, the campaign donated 120,884kg of food, equivalent to 345,385 meals, or an eighth of the food bank’s total requirements.

Cold Storage and Giant Singapore: Fighting Food Insecurity “Better Together” Food Donation Programme

With every FRAKTA bag purchased, IKEA Macau reserves $1 for a fund that aims to have a positive impact on the local community. In 2021, it partnered with local social welfare organisation the Sisters of the Good Shepherd to renovate its short-stay shelter for women and children in need. Team members used their professional space planning skills and IKEA products to transform it into a functional, cosy space that meets the needs of different users and provides them with a comfortable environment.

Since April 2020, 7-Eleven has donated more than 60,000 of 7-SIGNATURE's own brand products, including bread, meal boxes and meal vouchers, to those worst affected by the pandemic, through the charities Pei Ho Counterparts and the Hong Kong Christian Service. Apart from providing food, 7-Eleven team members also prepared 1,000 anti-epidemic goodie bags for elderly people, homeless people, street cleaners and grassroots families.

In addition, 7-Eleven introduced the Meal Voucher Program: for every HK$15 voucher its customers bought, it donated an own-brand, microwavable, ready-to-eat meal box. In total, 553,787 meals were donated. The company partnered with charities including Hong Kong Christian Service, Foodlink, Food Angel, Pei Ho Counterparts and People’s Food Bank to distribute the meal vouchers to people in need.

7-Eleven Hong Kong: Charity Meal Vouchers Help to Feed Society’s Less Fortunate

During the early stage of the pandemic in 2020, 7-Eleven Southern China partnered with Guangzhou Volunteers Association and Guangzhou Chain Marketing Association to launch the Meal Voucher Programme, providing 80,000 meals to elderly people and children in Guangzhou through 126 voluntary and social service organisations. The company was inspired to start the programme after noticing that the catering services of most community canteens were suspended, while accessing regular meals could also be a problem for children in need, especially those whose parents were away for work.

7-Eleven Southern China: Providing Meals to Children and Elderly

In July and August 2021, Mannings played its part in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, donating more than 350,000 bottles of hand sanitiser and antibacterial wet wipes to support the community. They were distributed to more than 30 charities, including elderly homes, community centres, schools and rehabilitation centres.
